Already a favourite amongst so many of you, our Masseria Borgo Dei Trulli Lucale Primitivo Appassimento 2022, has just won a gold medal at the 2024 Sommelier Wine Awards.
Here's what the judges said:
"A complex wine that ticks all the boxes, with intense aromas and flavours of red and dark fruits, including wild cherry, strawberry and blackberry, combined with hints of leather and tobacco, leading to a long finish." Anastasios Karakasis, Bacchanalia.
"A brilliant, intense Primitivo with a dense, slightly rich texture, soft acidity, fine tannins and a mineral finish." Chris Goodale, Julie’s Restaurant.
Masseria Borgo Dei Trulli Lucale Primitivo Appasimento - Lucale is intense garnet red in colour, with a complex bouquet reminiscent of cherries, raspberries and redcurrants. The oak ageing adds a pleasant roasted and spicy aroma. Full-bodied, it is supple and well-balanced, with layers upon layers of dark fruit, fine tannins and a long and lingering finish. It is perfect with roasted red meats and hard cheeses.
The Primitivo grapes are carefully selected from low-yielding vineyards in the Communes of Avetrana and Manduria, in the Province of Taranto, southern Puglia.
Made in the 'appassimento' style using a special technique called “il giro del picciolo”(the twisting of the stem), which is applied to approximately 50% of the grapes. The twisting the grape bunch stem means that no further nourishment reaches the grapes, thus inducing a natural drying of the fruit on the vine. The grapes are left on the plant for approximately 12 days (along with the other grapes which benefit from the late harvesting) and lose approximately 25-30% of their weight in water, concentrating their flavours and aromas.
In the ‘heel of Italy’s boot’, in the Salento region of Puglia, lies Masseria Borgo dei Trulli. The winery takes its name from the plural of ‘Trullo’, traditional Puglian dry stone huts that were mainly used as field shelters or storehouses by Saracen populations hundreds of years ago. Remains of these ancient shelters are still present today.
